Maharashtra Approves Major Assistant Professor Recruitment
Maharashtra’s Higher and Technical Education Department has approved recruitment for 5,012 vacant assistant professor posts in recognised non-government aided colleges across the state.
The recruitment is accompanied by new transparency measures, including mandatory CCTV recording of interviews. The footage must be retained as a confidential record for at least one year, strengthening oversight of the selection process.
The vacancies have been calculated based on the workload arising from student strength as of October 1, 2025, according to a Government Resolution issued by the department.
CCTV Recording Made Mandatory
Under the new recruitment guidelines, colleges will have to record the entire interview process through CCTV cameras.
The footage must be preserved for a minimum of one year from the date of the interview. Importantly, colleges cannot delete the recordings if a complaint, objection, inquiry, judicial or statutory proceeding, or other administrative process relating to the recruitment is pending.
In such cases, the footage must remain available until the matter is resolved.
The measure is intended to strengthen accountability and ensure that the recruitment process remains transparent and fair.
Shortlisting Process to Follow UGC Guidelines
The government has also introduced measures aimed at making the initial candidate shortlisting process more transparent.
Colleges will have to use Table 3B of Appendix II of the University Grants Commission (UGC) notification dated July 18, 2018, while shortlisting candidates for interviews based on the number of applications received.
The process must also comply with the Maharashtra Educational Institutions (Reservation in Teachers’ Cadre) Act, 2021, along with applicable social and parallel reservation policies.
Colleges will be required to publish the shortlisting ratio and the list of selected candidates for interviews on their websites.
Universities to Receive Recruitment Data
The recruitment process will also involve greater digital information sharing between colleges and universities.
Colleges will have to submit an online list of all applicants to the concerned university, along with the marks awarded during shortlisting. Universities will be required to establish systems to preserve these records.
The shortlisted candidates’ list will also be shared with universities online, creating a documented trail throughout the selection process.
Online and Offline Applications Allowed
To widen access to the recruitment process, colleges will be required to accept applications online.
Candidates who prefer offline applications will also be allowed to apply through that mode, with institutions required to provide acknowledgement for applications received.
The government has also warned that institutions found involved in malpractice during assistant professor recruitment will face action according to applicable rules.
Focus on Merit-Based Recruitment
Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Patil said the recruitment for all 5,012 posts should be conducted in a transparent, fair and merit-based manner.
The new guidelines bring together requirements relating to shortlisting, reservations, applications, interviews, documentation and monitoring, with the stated objective of ensuring selection based on merit.
