Tesla Unveils New Roadster With SpaceX Thrusters, Production Expected in 2028

Date:

Tesla has unveiled a redesigned version of its electric Roadster featuring rocket-style thrusters developed in collaboration with SpaceX. The demonstration showcased aerial manoeuvres and high-performance capabilities, while Tesla said production is planned to begin in 2028.

The reveal comes years after the next-generation Roadster was first announced and as Tesla increasingly focuses on autonomous driving technology and robotics.

At an event held at a SpaceX test site in McGregor, Texas, the two-seat vehicle performed a series of dramatic demonstrations. These included turning in the air and using built-in thrusters during manoeuvres over other vehicles.

The presentation highlighted cooperation between Tesla and SpaceX engineers. However, the demonstrations do not establish that the vehicle is ready for routine road use or that all its showcased capabilities will be available in the production model.

Tesla vehicle engineering chief Lars Moravy said the Roadster could accelerate from zero to 60 mph (97 km/h) in less than one second and reach speeds above 230 mph (370 km/h).

The company also claimed a driving range of more than 300 miles (480 km) on a single charge.

These specifications are manufacturer claims, and final production specifications and independent performance testing remain important milestones ahead of launch.

Tesla’s reservation page listed different versions of the Roadster following the unveiling:

  • Performance: A listed deposit of $50,000.
  • Thrust: A listed deposit of $250,000, with acceleration thrusters.
  • Rocket: An invitation-only, single-seat version described as featuring a full flight system.

Tesla had previously quoted a base price of $200,000 when it revealed an earlier prototype nearly a decade ago. Executives did not announce updated target prices at the latest event.

The Roadster has faced repeated delays. Tesla initially presented its second-generation prototype in 2017 and had earlier indicated deliveries would begin in 2020.

The new production target of 2028 represents a significant extension of that timeline.

Tesla has also shifted more attention towards artificial intelligence, self-driving vehicles and robotics. The company introduced its Cybercab robotaxi and has been making room for production of its Optimus humanoid robots.
