Amid the ongoing political debate over voter list revisions, BJP leader Kirit Somaiya made significant claims regarding the removal of names from electoral rolls, linking the issue to alleged illegal entries in multiple regions.
Speaking in Pune, Kirit Somaiya said that nearly 90 lakh names have been removed from voter lists, referring to recent revisions carried out as part of electoral roll verification processes. He pointed out that in districts bordering Bangladesh, such as Murshidabad and Malda, a large number of names have been deleted.
He claimed that approximately 10 to 12 lakh alleged Bangladeshi names were removed from voter lists in these border districts, suggesting that the revision process has identified ineligible entries.
Kirit Somaiya further stated that similar concerns exist in Maharashtra, where certain areas have reportedly seen cases of individuals obtaining documents such as birth certificates despite questions over their eligibility. He mentioned locations including Mumbra, Sillod, Malegaon, Amravati, Mankhurd, and Malvani as areas where such issues have been observed.
He alleged that in these regions, many individuals may have obtained official documents but their names are not appearing in voter lists, raising questions about verification processes and eligibility criteria.
The remarks come at a time when voter list revisions have become a major political issue, particularly in West Bengal, where large scale deletions have sparked controversy and debate among political parties. While the Election Commission has maintained that such exercises are aimed at removing duplicate and ineligible entries, opposition parties have raised concerns over possible wrongful exclusions.
Kirit Somaiya’s statement reflects the BJP’s position that the revision process is necessary to maintain the integrity of electoral rolls. However, these claims remain part of the ongoing political discourse and have not been independently verified.
