Mumbai, Maharashtra, India
In a significant update on Maharashtra’s energy infrastructure, Chandrakant Dange, Nodal Officer for the petroleum product crisis in the state, highlighted the expanding network of City Gas Distribution systems aimed at improving access to cleaner fuel.
Speaking in Mumbai, Dange stated that a total of 12 City Gas Distribution (CGD) companies are currently operating across Maharashtra, ensuring the supply of piped natural gas and compressed natural gas to both urban and rural regions.
He pointed out that major metropolitan areas like Mumbai and Pune are primarily served by Mahanagar Gas Limited, which plays a key role in providing gas connectivity to households, industries, and transportation sectors in these cities.
In contrast, rural and semi-urban areas are being catered to by companies such as Torrent Gas, which has been expanding its footprint to ensure wider access to cleaner energy sources beyond major urban centers.
Dange’s remarks underscore the state’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its gas-based energy ecosystem, which is seen as a crucial step toward reducing dependence on conventional fuels and lowering carbon emissions. The expansion of CGD networks is aligned with broader national goals of promoting sustainable and environmentally friendly energy solutions.
The development of city gas infrastructure has also contributed to improved convenience for consumers, offering piped gas supply directly to homes and businesses, while also supporting the growth of CNG-based public transport systems.
Officials believe that increasing the number of CGD operators and expanding their reach will further enhance energy accessibility, particularly in underserved regions. The initiative is also expected to boost economic activity by supporting industries with a reliable and cleaner fuel supply.
Dange’s statement highlights Maharashtra’s steady progress in building a robust and inclusive gas distribution network, positioning the state as a key player in India’s transition toward cleaner energy alternatives.
