Pune: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast widespread rainfall across Konkan-Goa and Madhya Maharashtra through August 2, with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds expected in several areas until July 30–31.
The forecast comes as active monsoon conditions continue across western Maharashtra, bringing steady rainfall, cooler temperatures, and improved water availability across the region.
According to the IMD, active monsoon conditions are likely to persist over:
- Konkan-Goa
- Madhya Maharashtra
The weather department has also predicted:
- Widespread rainfall.
- Thunderstorms with lightning.
- Gusty winds reaching 30–40 kmph in isolated areas.
- Moderate to heavy showers in several districts.
Authorities have advised residents to stay updated with official weather forecasts while planning travel. Pune city and its surrounding areas remain under a Yellow Alert for heavy rainfall at isolated locations until July 30. Cloudy skies and intermittent showers continued throughout the day, with rainfall recorded at several locations, including:
- Chinchwad: 12 mm
- Pashan: 12 mm
- Shivajinagar: 11.7 mm
- Koregaon Park: 11 mm
- NDA: 2 mm
The city experienced light to moderate rain during most parts of the day. Several parts of Pune district received notable rainfall during the past 24 hours.
Among the highest rainfall figures:
- Girivan: 50.5 mm
- Kurvande: 37.5 mm
- Bhor: 23 mm
- Talegaon: 21 mm
- Nimgiri: 9.5 mm
- Daund: 8 mm
- Rajgurunagar: 6.5 mm
Rainfall continued through Monday afternoon, with Talegaon receiving an additional 39.5 mm during the day. Since the beginning of the southwest monsoon on June 1, Pune district has recorded:
- 550.6 mm of rainfall.
This is approximately 241.9 mm above the seasonal average, reflecting an active monsoon season across the region. The IMD expects weather conditions to improve slightly from Tuesday, although rainfall activity is expected to continue. The Western Ghats have continued to witness substantial rainfall, although weather experts note that rainfall intensity has started to moderate compared to earlier weeks.
Key rainfall figures include:
- Tamhini: 210 mm
- Shirgaon: 160 mm
- Dawdi: 134 mm
- Bhira: 127 mm
These locations fall within the IMD’s “very heavy rainfall” category.
Tamhini has emerged as one of Maharashtra’s wettest locations this monsoon.
According to weather experts:
- Seasonal rainfall has reached 5,479 mm.
- The total rainfall this season has exceeded that recorded in Cherrapunji, Meghalaya, during the same period.
The exceptional rainfall highlights the intensity of the southwest monsoon over the Western Ghats this year. The ongoing rains have also contributed to comfortable daytime temperatures.
According to the IMD:
- Maximum temperature in Pune: Around 27°C
- Minimum temperature: Around 22°C
Both temperatures remain close to the seasonal average, offering relief from summer heat.
The continued monsoon activity is expected to provide several benefits, including:
- Improved soil moisture.
- Better water availability.
- Support for Kharif crop cultivation.
- Increased reservoir inflows.
- Enhanced groundwater recharge.
The sustained rainfall is considered favourable for agriculture across much of western Maharashtra.
